Participant Information Sheet

The effectiveness of an internet-based physical activity intervention with tailored advice targeting adults 65+ years.

Thank you for your interest in participating in this research. This research is being conducted through the Physical Activity Research Group based at CQUniversity.

Physical activity reduces risk of disease and leads to improved physical and mental health. Access to the internet presents an ideal opportunity to promote healthy behaviour as people can access information at any time at their own convenience.

Our research team has developed a website to try to assess the effectiveness of an internet-based health promotion program for improving physical activity habits of Australian adults 65+ years. Our website will provide you with personalised feedback about your physical activity levels and how you can improve them; giving you the ideal opportunity to live active and healthy.

Is this study for you?

To participate in the program you must meet all of the below criteria:

  1. Speak English
  2. Have access to a computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection
  3. Be 65 years of age or above
  4. Not currently participating in 30 minutes of physical activity on five or more days of the week
  5. Able and willing to increase your physical activity.
  6. Not currently participating in a physical activity program (e.g. 10,000 steps, Michelle Bridges 12wbt) that provides you with information and support to get more active (excludes exercise and walking groups)
  7. Not used a Fitbit (or similar) device for monitoring physical activity in the last 12 months

What does participation involve?

The project will take 6-months to participate in. A 12-week physical activity program that includes 6 fortnightly sessions of personalised physical activity advice will be delivered over the internet. If you decide to participate you will be required to complete 4 online questionnaires (at the start of the study, and 6-, 12- and 24-weeks). The first and third questionnaires will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, but only 10 minutes for the second and fourth questionnaires. Participants will also be required to wear a physical activity tracking device for one week at the start of the study and at 12 weeks and attend two appointments to return the accelerometer.

Participants will be randomly assigned to one of 3 groups.

Tailoring only group: Participants in the tailoring only group will be given access to the 12-week online physical activity program with 6 modules of personalised advice and will be asked to complete the 4 research questionnaires and wear and return the physical activity tracking device prior to program commencement and at 12-weeks.

Tailoring and Fitbit group: Participants in the tailoring and Fitbit group will be given access to the same 12-week online physical activity program with 6 modules of personalised advice as the tailoring only group and will be asked to complete the 4 research questionnaires and wear and return the physical activity tracking device prior to program commencement and at 12-weeks. In addition, the tailoring and Fitbit group will receive a Fitbit activity tracker to record their physical activity. Their personalised advice will be based on their Fitbit data.

Control: Participants in the control group will be asked to complete the 4 research questionnaires and wear and return the physical activity tracking device prior to program commencement and at 12-weeks. The control group will be given access to the program after finishing the study.

Each participant’s usage of the program website (e.g. number of logins and time on site) will also be collected automatically throughout the program.

Participant benefits

Participants will receive free access to the 12-week physical activity program. If participants complete all 4 questionnaires and wear and return the physical activity tracking device prior to program commencement and at 12-weeks they will receive a $50 Woolworths voucher.

Participants receiving a cash honorarium or reimbursement, or any form of gift voucher should seek independent financial advice as to whether it needs to be declared as taxable income.

Your rights as a participant

The health benefits of increasing activity outweighs any risks, however the program is not appropriate for you if you have a physical impairment preventing you from becoming more active.

You are able to withdraw or decline to participate in the program at any stage. However, you will not be eligible to receive the $50 Woolworths voucher if you leave before the end of the study.

No personal information that could identify you will be disclosed in any reports on the project, or to any other party.

At the end of the study a plain English statement summarising study findings will be available to all participants.

Please note that there is no obligation to be involved in this program and your participation is entirely voluntary.
